About Peak Design
The purpose of Peak Design is to create happy, meaningful lives for the people that work here. We believe this purpose can only be achieved when self-actualizing, highly stoked people enthusiastically step into (or log onto) the Peak Design office every day. Our purpose and our mission go hand-in-hand and we encourage and celebrate authenticity and the unique perspective each of our employees brings. We’re a close-knit team that thrives on mutual respect and the belief that every voice matters—especially when it’s got something interesting to say.
We make radical, meticulously-engineered gear for detail-obsessed people. Our backpacks, travel bags, camera gear, and phone accessories are used dang-near everywhere. If you’ve visited Machu Picchu, Tokyo, or an REI store in the last 10 years, you’ve been within ogling distance of a Peak Design product.
Alongside our
award-winning gear is a brand that truly reflects who we are as people—passionate about design, deeply caring about our environmental and social impact, unafraid to speak up, radically transparent, and generally down to clown. Whether we’re
explaining a product,
running a sale,
launching a nonprofit,
sponsoring a film, or razzing the
biggest company on Earth, we do it with our trademark honesty, warmth, and wit. Through our products and our brand, we aim to create delight, and leave this world better than how we found it.
About the job
We’re launching our first Portland pop-up at Bridgeport Village and looking for a strong, self-directed Store Manager to lead it.
This is a ground-floor opportunity to run a high-visibility, high-impact, retail concept. You’ll lead a tight team, own the daily business and prove out a new market for Peak Design. The store is intentionally small and focused. That means fewer layers, faster decisions and full ownership of the floor. You will set the tone, drive sales performance, and operate autonomously in a premium outdoor mall environment.
This role is ideal for a leader who loves selling, coaching in real time, and running a sharp, efficient store. It’s hands on. It’s fast moving. It’s yours to own.
About the role
This is a temporary role (~10 months) to lead at our first (!) Oregon pop-up shop.
People leadership
- Drive sales performance and maintain strong productivity standards
- Lead by example on the floor with exceptional product knowledge and consultative selling
- Serve as the primary brand ambassador in Portland, representing Peak Design with confidence and authenticity
- Deliver a premium customer experience that reflects our design ethos and values
- Monitor and actively manage KPIs including transactions per hour, conversion and attachment rate
- Ensure compliance with mall operating requirements and maintain strong operational discipline
- This is a working manager role. You will be present on the floor and directly involved in selling every day.
Products and inventory
- Maintain accurate inventory through monthly cycle counts
- Ensure the space remains organized and efficient despite limited storage
- Maintain storage unit on-site
Physical space
- Keep the kiosk clean, sharp, and visually consistent with brand standards
- Maintain product displays and signage
- Communicate maintenance needs as they arise
Role requirements
- At least 2-3 years of people management experience
- Experience operating in a mall or high traffic retail environment preferred
- An upbeat and energetic people person who naturally connects with others
- A self-starter who tackles challenges with a rockstar's enthusiasm and determination
- Exceptionally organized and highly meticulous in all endeavors
- Environmentally conscious
- Thrives in an active, social, and lively workspace, finding inspiration in a dynamic environment
- Enjoys community building, fostering connections and creating a sense of belonging
- Highly adaptable, readily embracing change and new opportunities
- Possesses strong leadership and motivating skills, inspiring and guiding others to excel
- Ability to work 5 days a week, which includes weekends
- Ability to travel to San Francisco or to another retail location at least twice a year
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in suburban or mall based retail
- Passionate about travel, photography, design, and other creative outlets
- Strong connection to the Portland community
A day in the life
- You arrive before opening and walk the kiosk top to bottom. No strap is out of place; no display is misaligned. In this small space, the details matter! Ensure all items are restocked, signs are dusted and aligned, and the space feels intentional before the doors open.
- When you unlock the kiosk to welcome early traffic, you’re the sole employee, responsible for helping all customers by introducing them to our brand and guiding them through our product offerings.
- Midday, your Gear Expert joins. You align quickly on the daily goals, then lead by example on the floor by demonstrating products, closing sales confidently, and coaching in real time.
- Between customers, you step to the on-site storage unit to pull inventory, receive a shipment, or replenish key SKUs.
- In slower moments, you review store metrics, respond to Slack, adjust upcoming schedules, and plan inventory flow.
- Before close, you reset the space again: High visibility. High ownership. A store that reflects you.
Salary range
- $55,000 - $65,000
- Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Peak Design is considering for this position.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
